Strelia is based in the heart of Europe, with head offices in Brussels and Luxembourg. We focus on general corporate law, commercial matters, and dispute resolution. We advise clients on M&A, Private Equity, Corporate, Banking & Finance, Capital Markets, Commercial Agreements, Restructuring & Insolvency, Tax, Employment & Benefits, Dispute Resolution, Competition Law & Regulatory and Real Estate & Administrative Law.

Our level of service and high quality of work meet the standards of international firms, but we never compromise on our commitment to and flexibility for our clients, our responsiveness and our cost-effectiveness, which are the traits of a boutique firm.

We undertake local and cross-border work for our clients, and we have strong ties with foreign law firms in all communities across the globe.

We fiercely defend our clients’ interests in all types of matters – transactional and contentious legal work. For us, great lawyers should possess more than excellent legal expertise and experience. They should also have a great deal of common sense (which is often forgotten when dealing with matters of law) and strong business acumen.

We truly believe that building and maintaining a solid, trusting relationship with our clients and their businesses is a central pillar of our client servicing, and we happily invest in achieving a better understanding of their needs and circumstances.

We concentrate on what we do best and how we can bring real added value to our clients. And whenever necessary, we join forces with experts in specialist areas to create appropriately-sized multidisciplinary teams to ensure efficient and quality advice.

Our aim is to be the preferred corporate and litigation law firm for Belgian and international companies.

Our Core Values

We are guided by these values (not in any particular order) in everything we do, and we instil them in all our lawyers and staff members.

Excellence

We define excellence to mean delivering high quality work, being innovative and providing cost-effective solutions to our clients in an efficient manner.

Teamwork

We are a team, both us at the firm and also when together with the client and any other persons who are called to be part of the team to defend our client’s interests.

Client Dedication

All our lawyers and staff truly care about our clients. We therefore dedicate our time and efforts to help them achieve their business objectives.

Respect For Others

We treat everyone with kindness, respect and acceptance, inside and outside of our firm.

History

Strelia was founded on 1 January 2013 by a handful of experienced partners from international firms, accompanied by their associates.

They were enthusiastic about continuing to deliver the same range and quality of services to the same category of clients but in a way in which the clients (and their interests) and the well-being of the lawyers at the firm would be at the heart of everything they do. Over the years, other lawyers who share the same vision have also joined Strelia.

The name ‘Strelia’ is inspired by the Spanish and Portuguese word for star: ‘estrel(l)a’. One of the characteristics of stars is that they give light in the dark, and we consider ourselves to serve a similar purpose as that of the stars: to enlighten and guide our clients using our insight and expertise to advise them on all legal aspects of their transactions and disputes, however complex they may be.

International Outlook

From our base in the centre of Europe, in Belgium and Luxembourg, we have an international approach as a law firm.

This stems from the fact that most of our partners have worked in international firms before founding or joining Strelia. In jurisdictions other than our own, we work with like-minded firms, i.e. those that hold the same values as ours and deliver the same level of quality in their work and client servicing – those with which we have established strong relationships over the years.

We are keen to remain fully independent and not become a member of any law firm alliance. This allows us to be free to call on any law firm that is best placed to assist our client efficiently, whether our selection is based on expertise, sector knowledge, budgetary requirements, etc.

This flexibility, among other efficient ways of working, resulted in Strelia being awarded Referral Law Firm of the Year at The Lawyers Awards in London in 2015.

Strelia recognises and values the importance of being different. We believe that each individual’s unique set of talents, skills, social backgrounds, culture, personal characteristics and their differences in gender, belief, sexual orientation and nationality contribute to creating a stronger workforce and a better law firm. We therefore take diversity seriously and continue on our pursuit of being a diverse and inclusive firm. Our lawyers and staff have various ethnic backgrounds, and we stand by this commitment of inclusion.

Strelia promotes gender diversity by organising the Women in Law and Leadership programme every year, inspiring female associates of Belgian law firms to take on leadership roles and coaching them on how to advance in their careers.

In early 2019, Strelia joined the Belgium-based Legal Diversity & Inclusion Alliance (LDIA). LDIA member firms affirm their commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive working environment, exchanging good practices on diversity and inclusion and raising awareness of non-discrimination and diversity issues by combining efforts in organising events, workshops and training.

In addition, Strelia also became a member of LILLA (Ladies in Law Luxembourg Association), which is also committed to promoting gender equality in the legal world in Luxembourg and encouraging female legal professional to stand out in the Luxembourg legal sector.

Strelia is also a proud sponsor of DIApositief, which stands for ‘diverse and inclusive law profession’ (in English). DIApositief is an initiative of the Dutch-speaking Brussels Bar, whose mission is to raise awareness of the legal profession among young migrants and to inspire them to pursue their studies and a career in law.

Furthermore, we actively support community engagement initiatives including fundraising for them. We do this through our lawyers’ and staff’s voluntary fundraising for several charities. This includes their participation in the annual Legal Run, which groups runners from numerous local and international law firms in Brussels who join forces in seeking financial sponsorship to run 20 km through Brussels to raise funds for a local charity of their choosing every year.

We are aware of being privileged, so we are committed to giving back to the community. Our pro bono programme allows our lawyers to apply their skills by assisting individuals and organisations who do not have the financial resources required for obtaining such legal assistance. We encourage our lawyers to dedicate themselves to helping those in need and improving the community by selecting their own pro bono work.

If you have a project that may be eligible for the Strelia Pro Bono programme, please feel free to contact us.
